Sodium formate (English name Sodium formate; Formic acid sodium salt) also known as sodium formic acid, the crystal contains two crystal water, it is also known as sodium dihydrate, sodium formate dihydrate, sodium bihydrate sodium formic acid (Sodiumformatehydrate). Sodium formate is one of the simplest organic carboxylates. It is a white crystal or powder with a slight odor of formic acid. Slight deliquescence and hygroscopicity. Soluble in about 1.3 parts water and glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol, octanol, insoluble in ether. Its aqueous solution is alkaline. Sodium formate decomposes into hydrogen and sodium oxalate upon heating, followed by the formation of sodium carbonate. Sodium formate is mainly used for the production of insurance powder, oxalic acid and formic acid. In the leather industry as camouflage acid in the chrome tanning process, used as a catalyst and stabilizing synthetic agent, reducing agent in the printing and dyeing industry.
