Sodium sulfide is also called vulcanized alkali, stinky soda and smelly alkali. The pure products at normal temperature are prismatic crystals with colourless or micro purple. The industrial sodium sulfide is often pink, brown and yellow because of impurities. Rotten eggs smell bad, corrosive and toxic, with a density of 2.427. At 920 degrees centigrade. It can dissolve in cold water and soluble in hot water. It is almost completely hydrolyzed to sodium hydroxide and sodium hydrogen sulfide when dissolved in water (the solubility is 15.4g at 10 C, the solubility is 57.2g at 90 C), the water solution is strong alkaline, and it is corrosive to copper, wood, skin and so on. It is slightly soluble in ethanol and insoluble in ether. Sodium sulfide reacts with strong acid to release hydrogen sulfide. Deliquescence in air causes oxidation of sodium thiosulfate. Sodium sulfide is mainly used as a skin hair removal agent, pulp cooking agent, the raw material of the vulcanized dyestuff, the reducing agent of the dye intermediate, the dyed mordant of the fabric, the ore flotation agent, as well as the viscose fiber desulphurizer, and the production of sodium hydrogen sulfide and sodium sulfide.
