DMF is a transparent liquid that can dissolve with water and most organic solvents. It is a common solvent for chemical reactions. Pure dimethylformamide has a special odor, while industrial or spoiled dimethylformamide has a fishy smell because it contains impurities of dimethylamine. The name comes from the fact that it is a dimethyl substitute for formamide (formic acid's amide), and both methyl groups are on N (nitrogen) atoms. Dimethylformamide is a polar (hydrophilic) non-proton solvent with high boiling point, which can promote the mechanism of SN2 reaction. Dimethylformamide is made from methyl formate and dimethylamine. Dimethylformamide is unstable (especially at high temperature) in the presence of strong bases such as sodium hydroxide or strong acids such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid and is hydrolyzed to formic acid and dimethylamine.
