Use
Used as precipitant, chemical reagent and water repellent; Palmitic acid is used to make chloramphenicol and various palmitic metal salts and can be used as emulsifier for emulsion polymerization. [4]
The sodium salt of palmitic acid or potassium salt can be used as emulsifier for emulsion polymerization. The sodium salt of palmitic acid is one of the main components of soap, and its aluminum salt and zinc salt are used in lubricants, coatings, inks and plasticizers. Industrial palmitic acid is produced by saponification and neutralization of animal and plant oils such as beef oil, pig oil and palm oil. In world war ii, derivatives of palmitic acid were used to make napalm. A mixture of palmitic acid and stearic acid at a ratio of 45% to 55% yields crystalline stearic acid products that can be used in the cosmetics industry.
