Phosphorus pentachloride (chemical formula: PCl5) is an inorganic compound. It is one of the most important phosphorus chlorides, the others are phosphorus trichloride and phosphorus tricloxyl. Pale yellow crystal, irritating smell, easy to sublimate. It is mainly used as chlorination agent and can have different structures under different conditions.

1. Used as chlorination agent and catalyst in organic synthesis. It is the raw material for producing medicine, dye and chemical fiber, and it is also the raw material for producing phosphatonitrile chloride and phosphatidyl chloride.
2. Phosphorus pentachloride is mainly used as chlorination reagent for alcohol, carboxylic acid, amide, aldosterone, enol and Beckmann rearrangement reagent.
Storage method editing
Storage precautions: store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat. Library temperature not to exceed 30 ℃, relative humidity less than 75%. The package must be sealed against moisture. It should be stored separately from acid, alcohol, active metal powder, alkali metal and edible chemicals. The storage area shall be provided with suitable materials for containment of leakage.

Invasion: inhalation, ingestion, percutaneous absorption.
Health hazards: its vapor and smoke can cause eye conjunctival irritation symptoms. Stimulation of the throat causes burning pain, loss of voice or difficulty swallowing, and can cause bronchitis, pneumonia and pulmonary edema.
Toxicity: moderate toxicity.
Acute toxicity: LD50:660mg/Kg(rat via mouth); LC50:205mg/m3(inhaled by rats)
IDLH: 70 mg/m3
It can be decomposed by water in the eyes and respiratory tract to form tricloxophos, phosphoric acid and hydrochloric acid. Phosphorus pentachloride steam and smoke to the respiratory tract, eyes, oral mucosa has a very strong stimulation, follow-up sessions can cause burning pain, or difficulty swallowing, severe cases can be caused by laryngeal edema, suffocation, and may cause bronchitis, chemical pneumonia, pulmonary edema, chest can smell of dry and wet rale, this effect is similar to phosgene (COCl2), toxicity than phosphorus trichloride.
Hazardous properties: heat, smoke and even explosion in the presence of water.
Combustion (decomposition) products: hydrogen chloride, phosphorus oxide, phosphorus alkanes.
